Phobias come in many guises but all phobias are a result of inner anxiety which has been triggered by an initial event. There are many phobias too numerous to mention here but the most common ones are Fear of Flying (Aerophobia), Fear of Driving mainly on motorways, fear of dogs and being bitten and fear of enclosed spaces (Claustrophobia).
Fear of Being Sick, Vomiting (Emetophobia), Fear of Mixing or Socializing with People, (Social Phobia, Social Anxiety), fear of spiders, fear of heights and fear of the dentist (dental phobia) are also very common phobias.
A person with a Fear of Flying will be put into a anxious state even when discussing the idea of a holiday which involves aircraft. As the trip gets nearer the feelings of panic and the fear of flying will grow until the actual boarding of the plane when a full blown panic attack may occur.

The list of phobias seems endless with new ones being added constantly. It seems anything a person can do they can be phobic about. A phobia is different to a normal fear in that is it generally irrational. If you suffer from a phobia you may remember why it happened but then again you may not. Children often pick up their phobias from their parents as in fear of spiders for instance but spider phobia can come about just as easily by being chased by someone, say in the schoolyard, with a spider in their hand with the threat of putting down the neck of your jumper. You could have even picked up the phobia from watching a film some time.
However the phobia started it’s certainly no fun having to live with one. While most of us look forward to summer those with a phobia of wasps dread the warm season. Normal fears are rational and are designed to keep you safe, such as a fear of fire and a fear of heights as burning yourself and falling off a high building would be a stupid thing to do but when the fear becomes so bad that normal living is interrupted than the fear has become a phobia.
