The Power of Intention

September 30th, 2009

There is huge power in intention.  Every single thing you do has intention in it and the results you get from every endeavor depend on the intention you put in before you start it.

Your intentions go out into the Universe and are returned to you by ‘The Law of Attraction.’  Here are some examples of how the power of intention works.

Imagine waking up on a morning, as some people do, and heaving a big sigh.  You didn’t even say a word but your intention was, “Just give me another crappy day like yesterday.”

Wow, that was a good one and you haven’t even got out of bed yet.

If there’s a phone call you’re not looking forward to making, your intention is, “This is going to be difficult.”

What about those jobs around the house that you’ve been putting off for ages?  If you aren’t looking forward to them the same thing applies, you’re intending them to be hard.

Imagine if you are planning on going out at the weekend with some good friends and you are really looking forward to it?  Your intention is that you will have a good time.

Someone told me recently that she hated parties. She said she’d always felt the same and that apart from one particular occasion she’d spent her lifetime being thoroughly bored at every party she attended.

This meant that every time she was invited to a party her intention was, “I’m not going to enjoy this, I’ll be bored and feel left out,” and she fulfilled her intention every time.

I explained to her that she must have picked up this belief somewhere in childhood, although she couldn’t remember when, and that she could change right now by intending to enjoy herself the very next time she was invited to a ‘do.’

How about when you go on a diet or join your local weightwatchers class and you think to yourself, “This is going to be hard work.”  Believe me, with that thought, it will be just that.

Intention and beliefs often go hand in hand and give you back exactly what you are planning for.

Change your intention and change the results you get from anything.

Feeling Overwhelmed?

September 30th, 2009

Here’s a great technique to use when you’re feeling overwhelmed or at any time things aren’t going the way you’d like them to. It comes from Gerry and Esther Hicks book ‘Ask and it is Given,’ which is a great book I’d thoroughly recommend.

The technique is called ‘Segment Intending’ and it works because ‘Intention’ is everything.  Whether you know it or not you put ‘Intention’ into every single thing you do.  Click on the ‘Positive Thinking’ link to read a post on ‘The Power of Intention.’

Segment Intending

Use this exercise when:

  • You want to change or influence a particular upcoming segment of your day.
  • You recognise or believe that something coming up may be difficult or not go as you want, to make sure it goes the way you want.
  • When time or money is important to you, and you want to make the most of it.

It is easier to create a future experience than it is to change an already existing one.  What exists right now is a result of your past thoughts and continuing to focus on what is wrong right now will result in projecting more of that into the future.

So if you are looking at a mountain of work and wondering how in God’s name you will ever get through it, the thoughts you are having about the impossible situation will keep the same experience with you day after day.  Whatever you focus on is what you get remember.

Your subconscious mind is habitual.  It remembers things and goes into default mode.  If there is always a mountain of work on your desk and you are always feeling frustrated by the never ending load you will spend every day at work in the same habitual way.

‘It’ (your subconscious mind) is also amenable to suggestion and has to find a way to obey your commands or requests.  However if you don’t tell ‘It’ to do anything different ‘It’ will keep on repeating the old pattern.  Segment Intending allows you to make those changes in a simple way.

Imagine for a moment that your day is in segments!  Each segment can be as long or as short as you like but for the purpose of this explanation we’ll make them short.  When you get out of bed in the morning your first segment can be from awakening to leaving for work, the next segment can be the journey to work and segment three can be from starting time to first break, then from first break until lunchtime etc.

If you have a meeting to attend then make that a separate segment too. Similarly, if you have one or more phone calls to make you can make a segment for them too, either as a whole, if they are connected, or each separate one.  It is a good idea to enter a separate segment any time your intentions change.  When you get into your car, get home and cook the evening meal or a friend pops around, you enter a new segment.

At the beginning of each segment you set your intention:

  • Everything is going according to plan this morning I’m ready for work with time to spare
  • I’m driving safely to work, it’s a great journey, the traffic is light and I arrive at work on time
  • The perfect parking place is waiting for me when I arrive
  • I’m flying, (skipping, racing, dancing) through this work really quickly
  • This meeting is going really well, everyone is in agreement and it’s over really quickly
  • I’m feeling energised and I’m getting loads done
  • In the next two hours I am achieving ………………………….

Contrast this to what you normally intend:

  • Oh dear, look at the time, I’m going to be late again
  • I bet the traffic is bad this morning and I’ll be late for work
  • I bet I can’t find anywhere to park
  • Look at all this work I’ve got to wade (plough) through, it’s never ending
  • I’m not looking forward to this meeting it’s going to be really tricky
  • I’m knackered and I can’t concentrate
  • I’m never going to get this done

You can pre-pave future intentions that are immediate or experiences that are in your more distant future using this tool.  For instance, “I’m having a great holiday,” as soon as it’s booked, or “My wedding day is fantastic, it’s the best day of my life,” even when it’s months away.

Before, I hear you say, “But this all sounds like hard work,” remember you are already pre-paving your future experiences constantly without even realising you are doing so.  You are continually projecting your expectations into your future experiences. (See above)

If you go out with friends every Friday night for example and it’s always pretty boring that’s what you expect and that’s what you get.  If, instead, while getting ready, you say, “I’m having a great time tonight, a really funny, (brilliant or exciting) time.  I’m meeting lots of lovely people and having a ball,” or words to that effect something will happen to make that occur.

Once you have experienced segment intending in action you’ll want to do it more and more and more.

Have a good day, INTEND IT.

Love and best wishes until next time

“At The End Of Your Tether?”

September 28th, 2009

Hi there everyone,

I wrote this article for my newsletter recently and I thought I’d share it with you here.  It’s a great way of changing the way you think and getting some really good results. The subconscious mind gets its information in the form of pictures and that’s why metaphors are soooo powerful.

Metaphors paint vivid pictures in the mind using only a few words so beware of using negative ones as your deeper mind is very literal and takes everything you say as true.

Here’s the article – hope it helps!!!!

Are You, “At The End Of Your Tether?”  Break Loose With A New Metaphor.

  • “I’m up against a wall.”
  • “I’m drowning in work.”
  • “I’ll have to wade through it all.”
  • “I’m happy as a sand boy.”
  • “I’m floating on air.”
  • “I’ll skip through this.”
  • “I’ve reached a dead end.”
  • “I feel as if I’m on a roller coaster.”

What do all these statements have in common?  They’re metaphors. Just what is a metaphor?  Whenever you describe something as being like something else you’re creating a metaphor.  Metaphors are like symbols: a quick way of saying a lot.  People use metaphors all the time to describe how they feel about all kinds of things.

“Life is a battle” and “Life is a beach” are two metaphors and two very different ways of looking at the world.  If you were the sort of person who describes life as a battle you probably experience life in that way.  How about if you describe something you are doing as an “Uphill struggle,” how would that make you feel as you tackled the task?  Do you think it would make a difference if you decided instead to make it “An easy ride?”

Behind every metaphor is a system of beliefs.  When you choose a metaphor to describe your life or your situation you choose the beliefs it supports too.  This is why it’s wise to be careful about the way you describe your world, to yourself or to anyone else.

The words you use affect your emotions too making you feel either good or bad.  You’re hardly likely to feel good if you are describing yourself as being up to your neck in sh-t are you?

Metaphors are very descriptive and in common with stories they bypass the conscious mind and go straight to the subconscious.  If you’ve been, “Carrying the world around on your shoulders” or you’ve been “Feeling fenced in” stop now and find some new supportive metaphors that have the ability to change the way you feel and the way you operate.

How do you describe your world?  Is it a test or a struggle?”  What if it were a dance or a game?  Do you think you would feel differently about your work if you decided to skip through it as opposed to wading through it?  If you feel as if you’ve reached a dead end you could choose instead to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Instead of feeling bogged down or as weak as a kitten you could choose to feel as free as a bird or as strong as an ox.

Why not take a few moments right now to write down some of the metaphors you’ve been using and change them into ones that will support you.  Copy and paste the part below and get started on changing your negative metaphors today.

Becoming Aware Of Negative Metaphors

Become aware of the metaphors you use to describe your life.  You may have been using some of the following.  I’m going round in circles, I’m banging my head against a brick wall, I’ve hit a brick wall,  I’m on a roller coaster, I’m down in the dumps, I’m up in the air, I’m up the creek without a paddle.  Your subconscious mind is working from the pictures you give it and all of the above metaphors paint pretty grim pictures in the mind.

Negative metaphor………………………………………………………………………………………..

The picture (brief description)…………………………………………………………………………

I am willing to drop this metaphor from my vocabulary and replace it with………….

Positive metaphor………………………………………………………………………………………….

The picture (brief description)…………………………………………………………………………

Some suggestions:  Life is just a bowl of cherries, I’m riding along on the crest of a wave, Life’s a breeze, I’m climbing the ladder of success, Life is an adventure, Life is for living, I’m skipping through every day, I’m happy as a lark, I’m flying through this, I’m on the home run.

Start thinking of your own, be inventive, have fun.

When you’ve thought of half a dozen new ways of describing your life write out the new metaphors on post it notes and stick them around the house, in your office or in the car. Say them with meaning for a day or two and see how much different you feel, how much more work you are getting done and how much easier everything becomes.

Yes, choosing new metaphors can really change your life so give it a try.

Your Very Own Radar System

September 6th, 2009

Hi there,

I was working with a client today and teaching him why writing down his goals, and reading them or looking at them every day, actually works and thought I’d share it with you.

You see all this Law of Attraction stuff isn’t just mumbo jumbo it’s actually quite scientific and when you ‘get it’ you’ll see the point in committing your aspirations to paper.

It’s all to do with the way the conscious and subconscious mind works and a little gland that’s buried deep inside your brain called the Reticular Activating System, RAS for short.

According to scientific research your subconscious mind is registering at least 10,000 images or impressions a second.  Now that’s an awful lot of material  it’s picking up and as you can imagine you would probably go crazy if you had to be consciously aware of all that stuff.

Every second your deeper mind is aware of the sensations in every part of your body but none of that will come into your conscious awareness unless there’s discomfort or pain.  It’s also aware of temperature and light, but these won’t come into your conscious awareness either unless you get too hot or too cold.

It picks up things in the periphery of your vision but if they aren’t important or presenting danger you’ll just allow them to pass by.  Your ears pick up many things that simply stay as background noise unless you deliberately bring them to the fore.

Consciously you can only cope with between 7 and 12 things a second.  Yes really, and because there’s such a huge discrepancy between the amount of things you do register every second and the amount you can cope with consciously you have an in-built filter working for you night and day.

The RAS is a lump of grey matter about the size of the end of a little finger and it lies deep within the brain stem. It constantly goes through the over 10,000 things per second you could be consciously aware of picking out those things that are meaningful or important to you and bringing them to your attention.

The two parts of your mind work together to keep you safe.  If you had to rely on your conscious mind alone and its inability to cope with more than a dozen things a second you’d have been dead long before now.

And how does the RAS know what is meaningful to you?  It gets its information from the things you continually focus on or talk about.  To give you some idea of how it’s already working for you think back to when you got your last car.  Did you notice that suddenly the road was full of them?  Same colour, same model, everywhere you looked and you hadn’t even noticed them before.  That’s the RAS at work.

Imagine yourself at a party or reception or whatever. You’re in a packed room and you can barely hear the person you’re talking to.  Then, someone over the other side of the room mentions your name and immediately you’re ears prick up.  Again that’s the RAS at work.

Maybe you’ve noticed that if one of your family or friends gets diagnosed with a particular illness it’s suddenly being discussed everywhere.  You’ll start to notice articles in magazines or the newspaper.  You might see TV programs on the subject or overhear conversations about it at work. Suddenly it seems like everyone and his dog has it.

Is that because it has become the most talked about illness in the world or is it because your eyes and ears have become attuned to it now?  The information was always there but before it meant anything to you it was being filtered out.

If you are surrounded and bombarded by 10,000 bits of information a second and you can only be consciously aware of up to 12 maximum, imagine how much is being filtered out.  Most of what is happening around you is being missed.

I read recently about an experiment where 20 people were told to watch a 10 minute video of a netball match.  They were asked to count how many times the ball was passed during the clip.  After counting the scores they were asked to watch the video again this time without any particular instruction.

Every single participant refused to believe it was the same video as this time around they all noticed a person dressed in a gorilla suit walking on to the pitch and moving around among the players.  They’d been concentrating so hard on watching the ball and counting passes they had completely missed the obvious.

So if you really would like to own your own house but all you talk about is how impossible it is because…………………….!  I’ll let you fill in the reasons why but there’ll be plenty of them.  Then all your RAS can bring to your attention on the subject of buying houses is how impossible it is.  Everything you hear, see and read will convince you that you are right because anything to the contrary is being filtered out.

That’s why writing down your goals and looking at them every day helps not only to keep your mind focused on what you want, it utilises your brains natural ability to  bring your attention to the people and things that can help you to achieve them.

The answer to any problem is there, just there within reach.  It’s probably walking around in a gorilla suit but you just can’t see it because you aren’t focussed on what you want, you’re thinking about the lack of it or the reasons you can’t have it.

Write down your goals, make a point of looking at them and thinking about them often and leave your RAS to do its job of drawing your attention to the ways to achieve them.  Allow it to be easy as it guides you to information, people, conversations and anything else you would find helpful to further your career, improve your social or love life and take you where you want to go.

Writing down your goals triggers the RAS, which in turn sends a signal to the cerebral cortex: ‘Wake up! Pay attention! Don’t miss this detail!’ Once you write down a goal, your brain will be working overtime to see you get it, and will alert you to the signs and signals that, like the new car, were there all the time.

I hope this inspires you to act right now and achieve your goals.

About Me

September 6th, 2009

Hi, my name is Christine Wesson.  I’m a Clinical Hypnotherapist, EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) Practitioner and Trainer and a Metaphysical Practitioner and teacher.

I’ve been studying the mind and how it works since 1999.  It was then I first learned that all my problems were caused by me and the way I was thinking and boy did I have some problems back then.  What I learned was literally life changing and I’ve been hooked ever since.

My studies have taken me into fields as diverse as Quantum Physics, Philosophy, and many of the Worlds Religions.  I have studied the mind body connection among many other things and it seems that the more I discover the more there is to learn.

I do know that my discoveries have helped me and countless others I have had the pleasure to work with to lead healthier and fuller lives.

I sincerely hope you find many gems of wisdom within the pages of this blog that will help you too.  If you like anything I’d be happy to hear your comments.

To your success in life, Christine
